CAN I DRIVE IN ITALY WITH MY DRIVING LICENSE?

HOW TO OBTAIN AN INTERNATIONAL DRIVING PERMIT TO DRIVE IN ITALY

Many people that visit Rome think that it is enough having a national driving license to drive in Italy and Europe, so they rent car or scooter, without knowing what they risk.

If you want to drive in Italy and you are a foreigner you should read this post carefully.

To drive in Italy it is required a valid national driving license enabling to drive the catefory of the vehicle being driven.

Unless your national driving license was issued by an European (Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Ciprus, Croazia, Danemark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxemburg, Malta, Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Czech Republic, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Hungary) or Efta-member state (Iceland, Liechtenstein, Switzerlad, Norway), it must be accompanied either by an international driving permit, to be obtain prior to departure, or by a certified translation (traduzione giurata) into Italian.

To clarify better who require an International drivin permit to drive in Italy, we made a list of some countries whose citizens must own International driving permit:

Albania, Algeria, Argentina, Australia, Brasil, Bolivia, Bielorus, Canada, China, Cuba, Egypt, Hong Kong, India, Israel, Japan, Serbia, South Corea, Mexico, Russia, Singapore, South Africa, Turkey, United States of America.

It is important to obtain International driving permit prior the departure. It is not possible to obtain it in Italy or on Internet.

Don't buy International driving permit on internet from websites that promise you to get the permit in the same day or in few minutes, it is a frode.

Their permit are not official and are not valid in Italy and in the rest of the World.

Why you should have International driving permit?

Several rental companies don't ask you International driving permit but if you don't have it with you and you drive in Italy, if you are stopped for a police check you can get an expensive fine from minimal 400 € up to 1600 €. Police can also impound your vehicle and you will be responsible for your rental company and they will request you to pay extra costs.

Another reason, the most important, is that insurance company don't cover you in case of accident, if you are driving with a no valid driving license.

How can you obtain International driving permit?

Usually searching on Google you can find a lot of informations, in particular you can visit website of your national Embassy in Italy to find official informations.

For example on Us Embassy in Italy website is written that you can get it directly from American Automobile Association (AAA), in the same way in your country there will be an istitution that issues the International driving permit.

Hoping that this post is helpfuel for you, we ask you to share it with your friends to inform much more people is possible.
